Hi NCP,
It would help if you said what species & size the fish are.
Did you remove all the mature water ?
Did you wash the new sand ?
What filters do you have ? Did you just transfer the filter, or wash it out ?
How were the fish housed while the substrate was being changed and how long were they out of the tank ?

Hi they are a female fuellebourni 4-5cm, a male marble peacock 6-7cm, and two bumble bee cichlids about 3-5 cm.
Yes we did remove all of the mature water.
Yes we washed the sand a billion times the water was clear.
The filters we have are an aquaclear 200, atman power liquid filter (at-f101), aqua one internal filter (300f-lv), one that runs off of an air pump and an air stone.
The fish were put into another tank whilst we changed the tank.
The fish were out of the tank for about 3 and a half 4 hours.
Hope this helps me save the rest of my fishies.
Wich are not including the ones written above 1 fuellebourni, 2 bumblebee cichlids, 1 marble peacock, 4 electric blues, 4 electric yellows, 3 red zebra's, 2 marble zebra's, 2 perspicax, 4 hongi and 2 treweavassi.
But all these fish seem to be fine at the moment.

 Hard lesson to learn .
allways check your water even before and after a water
change try to get water conditions as close if not the same
as you had it before especially when your fish are looking
and behave well, any change in a healthy tank can be fatal
remember check and observe often
Cheers Ham.
