no more harder than freshwater (even easier in some aspects)
hehe not enough it was about once a month but now im getting saltwater at a good price im doing it fortnighly, when i get the time
it does but im only using the machine filtration in it pulled the bio balls out and stuck zeolite in. im using the live rock as my filter

When i first saw the tank i thought hmm it may be a little small but now that i have seen it with corals it seems there is a heap of room and they are booming.
Also if you really wanted a protein could you have a syphon and a small pump and get like a acrylic box made up with a protein in it outside the tank (behind it) kinda like a mini sump then just pump the water back into the tank. The_German sold me these little 250 liter per hour pumps that where like two match boxes lined up to each other in size.
Just check your system though if it is fine with out the protein them really why goto the trouble to have one
