Microworms - many of us aquarists would have heard of these but for those who haven't here's what they are.
They are tiny worms living in the thousands. We use them to feed our baby cichlids I have fed such as:
Archocentrus nigrofasciatus (Convicts)
Aequidens rivulatus (Green Terrors)
Aulonocara "Dragon Blood"
Aulonocara Jacobfreigbi "Eureka"
These have all been fed on microworms from an early stage (some just used up their yolk sacs first before feeding on the worms).
The babies grow rapidly if in a decent sized tank and fed on these microworms.
What you need
A colony - you can pick these up from some local fish shops. I got mine from Aquotix (they cost around five dollars for one colony).
Once you have them, scrape them off the wall of the container (I use a plastic spoon) then dip it in the water then watch your babies eat.
They can live for several days in the water.
How to make a new colony
1. I use disposable food containers like the chinese noodle but you can also use any sealable container. Make sure they are washed beforehand and definately don't use soap.
2. Then cut a small 2 centimetre hole in the top.
3. Next, make up a small batch of porridge that will fill the bottom of the container to half a centimetre. Remember to use milk instead of water (I found they thrive more) but dont make it too wet.
4. Next pour the porridge into the container, let it cool down.
5. Add a sprinkle of yeast and sugar on top of the porridge.
6. Add a small tablespoon of the existing colony of worms to the new container.
Within 2-3 days you will see them swarming up the sides of the container, and will be ready for serving.
Please Note
If you leave the microworms out somewhere dry they will dry out and die.
