I bet you the fisheries guys all have heaps of tanks at there home that they fill with free shrimp from taking them off everyone
ooops didnt mean to quote above post but having a good laugh at that.... sounds like another corrupt government department... we all know the police have the best drugs... seems like fisheries might have all the best shrimp soon too....
so reading through the thread as i understand it... they can take any fish at any time - and give you any bs reason they feel fit whether its legit or not...
i see shops as being the easiest possible target for justifying their jobs... they are open business hours 7 days a week and they donot move about and are not hard to find... unlike the real criminals that actually smuggle fish , drugs and whatever else they do these days... to catch them would actually take some brain power , research and genuine hard work.... not to mention all the people taking big numbers of undersize fish.... wish i could be a fisheries officer for a night and be paid per undersize fish that i caught people with... i could retire within a year i reckon...

A realistic action on their part to enforce their agenda would have been to visit South Perth last Tuesday night. That didn't happen; might have come across as a raid and been newsworthy. Newsworthy means publicity and light shining on them. Us hobbyists would have had the opportunity give our point of view.
No, they'd rather skulk and keep us wary. Shrimp for discussion at the PCS meeting prodded their pride. So now they're putting the frighteners on, hence "Cichlids are next...".

This absolutely burns me up, before the talk on Tuesday I actually did have a suspicion that someone would show up with something to say. Then I hear about Fridays fiasco and cannot help but to link the two events. As you said Labcat the former mentioned action would have seen them in a room with 30 relatively well informed and irate hobbyists leaving them on the back foot and with questions to answer. The latter suggested action had them making a very public scene and stretching some authoritative muscles without being held accountable by anyone.
If I may take this opportunity to apologise if it was my talk that brought all this down, I want to hope that it was sellers on Gumtree and on public forums cropping up that spiked their interest again but the talk and raid where just too closely timed in my mind.
As someone who loves these little guys more than most I feel like crap for possibly being the straw that broke the camels back. To quote Syd, "the definition of ignorance is 120 fisheries *officers*".

Who was that strange looking weirdo sitting at the back of the meeting with the big nose. Never seen him before.

It's far fetched and just a government body stepping on little guys. We as hobbiest have a responsibility but fisheries are just taking things to far.
It has really wrecked the hobby.
I could name many more fish species that pose a threat then some other fish.
Document it fisheries, get off your high horses and deal with real issues of hazard....!!

IMPOSTOR!!!!
Don't go Jules.... We need more people interested in that aspect of the hobby... So we actually have a few people to support TBs and oddballs.
I really want to have my own aquarium store, specialising in exotics one day.

Maybe it was Kleinz with no glasses on, trying to do the Clark Kent look?

I'd know a Tarpon if i saw one, i suspect it was a fisheries officer as he didn't seem to have any friends.

When i asked about the shrimp situation, they were very definite, shrimp are a no go. At this time shops will be the target, but private sellers will soon be on the radar again.
They intend to reduce smuggling in shrimp & exotics by removing the market ( end user).
I got the impression they are not really looking at currently owned specimens, more preventing any more from coming across the border.
I am posting this as information as I have been told, not to enter into any ethical or legal arguments.
Personally I would thoroughly recommend not antagonising fisheries at this time as they are pretty annoyed at recent actions if some individual private hobbyists & can make life much harder if they choose to.
